AC Lounge at Digha Railway Station

The South Eastern Railway (SER) has set up an air-conditioned lounge at the Digha train station. It will be inaugurated by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu soon. The lounge has a TV set and will be able to accommodate 40-45 people at a time.Charges have been fixed at Rs 18 per hour, irrespective of the class of travel.

Over the last few years, with CM Mamata Banerjee laying stress on the improvement of facilities at Digha, the volume of tourists -particularly from the middle and upper middle-classes -has gone up significantly. Digha was not very popular among a certain section of visitors till it got connected by rail as many weren't too comfortable travelling by bus.

“There are three daily services between Howrah and Digha. All three trains, Tamralipta Express, Digha Superfast AC Express and the Kandari Express, are popular and run to capacity during extended weekends and holidays. We feel the AC lounge will be very popular among passengers, particularly those returning to Howrah. Many tourists look for a place to spend a couple of hours after checking out of their hotels. They can now do so in the lounge. There are already several refreshment stalls at the station,“ said Sanjoy Ghosh, CPRO, SER.

According to another official, SER also has plans to introduce Wi-Fi at the lounge for passengers.
