The Indian Railways plays a key role in passenger transportation. It is cheap and convenient mode for movement within the country, ferrying passengers and their goods from all strata of the society. Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Railways, has set four mission areas for the organisation. Firstly to deliver a sustained and reasonable improvement in customer experience. Secondly, to make rail a safer means of travel. Thirdly to expand capacity substantially and modernise infrastructure and lastly to make the Railway financially sustainable. According to statistics of Indian Railways, 8221 million passengers travelled by trains in the year 2016-17, as against 8151 million passengers in the previous year i.e. 70 million more passengers. This is a commendable increase which shows that the masses in general rely on and are comfortable travelling by the railways. The total earnings this year is estimated to be around Rs47,400 crore, which is Rs2000 crore more than last year. This is the highest ever passenger earnings that has been earned and thus it is an all-time record. It is for the first time in recent years that negative growth has been seized and there is an upward trend in the number of passengers and earnings.

Speed is the essence of a transport system. It can be said with great pride that after improvement in infrastructure, the speed of 350 trains have been increased and 104 trains have been converted to Superfast Express trains. Passengers can now reach their destination faster and therefore reduce their travel time. Thirty four pairs of trains have been replaced with the state-of-art LHB coaches by utilisation of 42 LHB rakes.

The Railway considers every customer as its brand ambassador. Hence the satisfaction quotient of the passenger is important. To make travel more comfortable and pleasent, 87 new services have been introduced and destinations of 51 trains have been extended.
