Rail Traffic Disrupted for Nearly 3 hours

Rail traffic via Ernakulam was disrupted on Monday for nearly three hours due to a signal failure at Ernakulam Junction railway station. The problem which occurred around 8.30 am caused inconvenience to the commuters returning after various festivals, including Vishu and Easter, said commuters.

“The rail disruption occurred after an empty rake rolled down towards the north direction, resulting in signal failure at Ernakulam Junction station,” said a senior Railway officer.

He said normal traffic was restored by 11.35 am at Ernakulam Junction. One of the rakes of the Howrah-Ernakulam Antyodaya Express rolled down while the engine was being removed. Following the signal failure, two trains, scheduled to begin service from Ernakulam Junction, halted there for hours. Meanwhile, two trains were stopped at Edappally and Aluva railway stations. Commuters were caught unawares by trains encountering unexpected delay.

Office-goers, including IT professionals, government and bank employees, were the most affected as the trains from southern and northern parts of the state towards Ernakulam were unable to travel for three hours. The disruption created chaos as hundreds of commuters had to wait on the platforms for hours.
