Anti-noise crusaders in the city have written to railway minister Suresh Prabhu and initiated a Twitter campaign to bring down the high decibel levels commuters are subjected to during suburban train travel. According to a survey conducted by the NGO Awaaz Foundation, the highest noise level of 97.7 dB was recorded at Mahim railway junction, caused by drums and a harmonium. In comparison, 100 dB is made by a landing aircraft.

Awaaz convener Sumaira Abdulali on Wednesday travelled on the Harbour line from Bandra to CST and CST to Thane to measure noise levels after several complaints from commuters. “At Mahim a group of people got in with drums and a harmonium and were asking for money. They got off at the next station." she said. The junction's 97.7 dB was followed by the sound of a horn between Masjid and CST (92.7 dB) and beeps from the indicator in a compartment for the disabled at CST (92.1dB).

“Due to announcements in the new-rake train, often continuous, including public interest messages and station announcements, decibel levels in new trains exceed those in old trains. Bhajans in one train also increased noise pollution, “Abdulali wrote in her letter to Prabhu.

On the CST-Thane journey, the highest noise level of 91.6 dB was recorded near Byculla station when another train passed by. At CST, constant announcements while the train left hit 88.8 dB.
