If all goes well, you can soon get a last-minute discount of 10% on premium trains like Rajdhani, Duranto and August Kranti express. Taking into account the fall in number of passengers after the implementation of dynamic fare in such trains, the Western Railway (WR) has written to the Railway Board, urging it to modify the decision and allow the discount in case seats go empty.

“Ever since the dynamic fare system was introduced by the Railways in September 2016, we have been losing passengers especially in the second AC compartments,” said WR officials.

Mukul Jain, Divisional Railway Manager, WR, confirmed about the letter, and said, “The letter is pending for approval with the Board.”
“We are carrying out a survey on the system’s advantages and disadvantages. Before implementing it, we thought that this will be liked by passengers and they will be benefited. We are thinking to abolish the system in a few months, but a decision has not been taken,” said a Railway Board official, who did not want to be named. Once the Board clears the proposal, the discount will be given on the berths available after preparation of charts. Passengers can book these tickets on the IRCTC website or at the ticket counter prior to 30 minutes of the departure. Mohammad Irfan Ahmad, member PAC (Railway Board), said, “We are working on it as I have personally seen that seats are going empty in such trains.” Vivek Gupta, a passenger from Goregaon, said, “Prices for the premium trains must be kept uniform. If the Railways is running in losses, they should accept it and not increase fares. This is not fair to first increase the fare by 50 per cent and then give us the discount of 10%. ”

Ketan Temblekar, a commuter of Rajdhani Express, said, “The Railway is doing business with the people. Why do someone prefer travelling by trains? It’s because he has to pay less. If I am paying the amount equal to that of flight, why would I buy train tickets?”
