How Caterers Are Conning Passengers Travelling By Indian Railways

Indubitably, Suresh Prabhu has been the best Railway Minister so far. For all the good things he has done, new trains, innovations, a clear agenda for cleanliness, promptness and so much more, it will take more than a lifetime to thank him for doing his job so incredibly well.

But there's only so much that he can do.

On any given day, 12,617 trains run on Indian Railway, carrying lakhs of people from one place to another. Thus, it goes without saying that a simple fraud, can fetch crores and crores of rupees to anyone who's involved. This account of a retired IAS officer,  Shivendra K. Sinha will shock about how some systems work and just about how much more you end up paying at the cost of not questioning. Travelling by a train from Visakhapatnam to Howrah in Yesvantpur-Howrah Express, he ordered a veg meal for himself, which was priced at Rs 90.

It just somehow occurred to him that the price of a veg meal, according to Indian Railways standard was too high, which is when he decided to speculate. He then googled and instantly found the rate card on IRCTC's website. He was shocked to see that the actual cost of this meal was rupees 50, whereas it was sold for Rs 90- a whopping difference of Rs 40.
