A major power failure on Thursday morning disrupted Kolkata Metro service during peak hours, leaving many passengers stranded in darkness for almost 15 minutes.

Kolkata Metro authorities blamed the Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation for disconnection of power without any prior information and said it was for the first time in history that metro rail services were affected because of power failure.

“Electricity supply was disconnected at 9.53 am. Normal metro services resumed at 10.08 am,” Chief Public Relations Officer, Metro Railways, Indrani Banerjee, said

The trains which were in the tunnel were rolled and brought to the platforms, she said.

Passengers claimed it was pitch dark inside the tunnel and fans and air-conditioners stopped working leading to suffocation.

Since the power disruption occurred during peak office hours, the trains were crowded.
